Living Outside of Time is an expression that comes from reading The Red Book (Carl Gustav Jung). It refers to the human capacity to counteract the spirit of the times from the wisdom of the spirit of the deep - the creative energies, the fantasy, the ancestral character of the unconscious.

This project was born out of three fundamental pillars. First, the interest of a group of architecture students at IE in approaching the atavistic knowledge behind the use of traditional materials and their utilization in modern practices. Secondly, the research and teaching of of IE Professor Wesam Al Asali in his course Critical Constructs, which explore the applications of scarcity-driven experimentation in vernacular/ indigenous /local construction methods engaging with heritage knowledge towards environmentally sensitive designs. The third is the IE Creativity Day’s topic (Fr)Agility in its ode to human frailties argued to be prelude to empowerment.

Developed in parallel over the last year, these series of minor changes have led to the paradigm shift that their coincidence in this exhibition hall represents. The works on display have arisen mainly from the interaction of our students with the masters Carlos Fontals (basketry) and Ángel María Martín (lacemaking) thanks to Professor Wesam.

This exhibition has no aesthetic pretensions. It portrays, at most, the final station of a journey of different individuals through the nooks and crannies of the self, the learning of craftsmanship and artistic creativity
