Location: Tallin, Estonia

Collaborations: Joseph Choma, Jefferson Ellinger

Team: Hasan Hashas, Abbey Anderson, Seth Moore, Griffin Naddy, and Angie Mendoza

This knitted pavilion was shortlisted for the 2022 Tallin Architecture Beinnale. The iInstallation is a cultural artifact that embodies, embraces and collapses the past, present and future Like a giant inhabitable twisting infinity scarf, this knitted installation is made with wooden fiber using a timber loom. Wood is a fiber-base material. Like other plant-based fiber, it can be made into yarns or ropes through thread-ing. While knitted ropes will be the major skin of the pavilion, light-timber will be embedded inside the thickness of the knitted surface where additional support is necessary. Finally, the loom with which the in-stallation will be made with will be entirely fabricated with timber using computer numerical control machines, abundant in the timber industry in Estonia. Once the knitted pavilion is finished, bio-based epoxy resin will be applied to the knitted surface to ensure its durability and weather-proofing.Knitting is literally an expression of time—both historically and in the physi-cal act of making. The knitted surface pattern is intentionally not deterministic. As our installation is being built, individuals who are curious will be encouraged to participate in the performance of making. The construction site will not be off-limits, but will become a public event. It will be a means to teach this heri-tage craft, while an opportunity for those experienced to share their expertise and contribute to the design of the surface’s final pattern.
